Bi-Level Recast
Location:
New Jersey, USA
Year:
2026
This project reimagines a typical bi-level raised ranch, one of the most common yet often disliked housing types in the Northeast, into a fully modern, three-level home with a clear and functional hierarchy of spaces.
The existing structure, originally limited to a basement and upper living level, was completely transformed through the addition of a full second floor and a 19-foot expansion toward the southeast. The redesign eliminates the traditional split-entry condition, allowing direct access to a true first floor, creating a more intuitive and contemporary living experience.
The interior was fully reconfigured, with all previous layouts removed to accommodate a new spatial organization. Primary living areas are now oriented toward both the southeast and southwest, maximizing natural light and strengthening the connection to the surrounding landscape.
The architectural language shifts from a dated suburban typology to a refined modern composition, using clean lines, controlled proportions, and large window openings to bring light deep into the home.
This project demonstrates how a bi-level house, often seen as a limitation, can instead become the foundation for a high-quality, modern residence through strategic expansion and thoughtful design.
